Here's your first look at Nolan's Bane.

Guess that's as Bane-y as you can get without steroids or CGI.

Eh...the mask looks too "Lecter" to me. I prefer the Lucha look of T:AS. As long as they play him at least a little clever when he's not on venom I'll be happy, but the closer to "Evil Doc Savage" the better.

Yeah, tho given Bane's back story, I always found his design a little patronizing. He was a hispanic child in a hispanic prison his entire life. Heck, he was a virgin before he escaped, so why would his costume be a lucha libre unitard and mask other than he's hispanic...

Anyway, I agree with the mask sentiment. I'm hoping they play him clever. And he's clever when he's on Venom, it helped him keep it together and break the Bat. When he was running low, he was practically an animal and insane.

Incidentally, I wonder if they're going to use Batman: Venom as a reference. I'd like to see Batman at first try to compete with Bane by using Venom, only to learn a moral lesson. But we don't want to show kids Batman doing drugs.
>> No. 516 ID: 260373
>>515

Well, he wasn't as clever because he was an addict in need of a fix. The Venom didn't make him smarter... if anything it was clouding his judgment.
>> No. 519 ID: 16a405
>>516

Well, he basically had all the Venom he needed. He was intelligent enough to stalk Batman and kill him. In the comics (if you know this, I apologize, you seem fairly knowledgable :D), he came up with a plan to basically wear Batman down, figured out who Batman was and then broke him. The drug itself didn't contribute to his intelligence, but he was more erratic without it.

When Batman's replacement at the time locked up his goons (including the guys who knew where his extra Venom was) and the replacement cut his feeding tubes, he lost it and yeah, withdrawal basically broke him down.

...But enough of that. Let's get back to the fact that he's a guy who's been in prison all his life and somehow homes in on the Lucha Libre motif for his 'persona.' Heck, he was named Bane all his life, its not like he created 'Bane' to break the Bat.

I dunno, I think the mask looks more functional in this picture than symbolic and that would be Nolan's style.

Hell, he turned Scarecrow's mask into a protective piece of headgear as well as his "symbol" and it came out quite well.
>> No. 523 ID: 16a405
>>520

Scarecrow's mask (at least Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths) was always functioning as a gas mask.

Point is that Nolan doesn't normally do cosmetic things with the characters without a purpose.
>> No. 526 ID: 16a405
>>524
True dat. He even made Batman's arm-barbs worth something. I don't think I've ever seen them used with any consistency of purpose in the comics.
>> No. 527 ID: 98c9d4
>>526

And it makes sense. Everything about Batman's designs are for function. They had to have a purpose. Nolan just filled in what was largely left absent in the comics. Just little details like that. It's why I could not see another director doing this series better.

Apparently, a guy who lives in a town just 30 minutes away AND went to my college around the same time I did.. is going to be a villain in this move as well, though he is unlisted as of now.

He did state in our alumni magazine, that I got today, that the role he has been cast is a major villain role, but has to keep the name of the character a secret for now, though will probably be smaller compared to Bane and Catwoman.

There are, on various sites, still rumors that they might have Dr. Hugo Strange in there as well, and he could very well fit that part... perhaps. Included a picture of him from when he visited our campus a few months ago to discuss the role.

Ok I'm sorry but I gotta ask, why does everyone keep thinking Hugo Strange is gonna be a villain in this movie?

I mean he's already the main villain in Arkham City, I really don't think Nolan would put him in as a villain when another Batman Re-Imagining (of sorts) is using him.

If I remember correctly the story of Hugo/Batman in the comics that Strange was the only person aside from Tim Drake to figure out Batman/Bruce's true identity on their own, and the fact that Batman was/is a world renowned and recognized icon in the DC universe played a major part in that. Isn't Batman almost completely unknown outside of Gotham in Nolan's Universe?

I could be wrong and Rises could be taking a gigantic time jump forward and this would all be completely possible, but either way I just don't think Nolan would use Strange if he's already being used in a video game using the same character/universe.
>> No. 613 ID: a40592
>>612
If I remember correctly Hugo Strange was hired by Gotham PD to try and figure out who Batman is and even after figuring it out he went insane. So, yes Batman may be largely unknown outside of Gotham in Nolan's little world, but that doesn't stop someone from Gotham bringing in an expert from the outside.

Personally though, I don't think it's Hugo Strange. It would work but would be too obvious.

This, of course, is speculation. This picture here as well as the picture in the alumni magazine.. along with the rumors on the various forums and web sites had me thinking. (The actor shown in the picture above, has a hat on.. however, his picture in the magazine, shows that he is balding.. so it wouldn't take much to turn him into Strange.)

My dad, who's a comic fiend, also said that he could also be the Ventriloquist(Scarface) as well.

Speculattttion!

You know, I just realized. Since Nolan's off in his own universe, doing his own thing, theoretically he could actually pick up a plot point that was originally intended for Bane, but dropped from the actual comics before it was ever really used...

That Bane was Bruce's bastard half brother, the illegitimate son of Thomas Wayne, who got in trouble and fled the island accused of murder, leaving the unborn son he may or may not have known about to serve his life sentence in his place.

"He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at the back where there are two canisters of what ever it is... the anesthetic."

>The LA Times has posted the following scene description from The Dark Knight Rises:

Gotham City is a war zone. A ruthless madman named Bane has ripped away any sense of security and the citizens, haggard and clutching suitcases with refugee anxiety, sit behind barbed wire waiting to see what will blow up next. A hooded prisoner is dragged in – it's Bruce Wayne, one of Gotham's most famous faces – but the eyes of the crowd go instead to the woman in black standing at the top of the staircase.

"Sorry to spoil things, boys, but Bane needs these guys himself," says sultry Selina Kyle, played here by actress Anne Hathaway, navigating the steps with stiletto heels that, on closer inspection, turn out to have serrated edges capable of leaving nasty claw marks in a fight. She also wears high-tech goggles that, when not in use, flip up and resemble feline ears.

You guys do realize that the "similar themes" thing is less "Oh, we took direct inspiration from OWS" and more "Well ideas in the movie happen to be similar to the ideas behind OWS," right? The movie started filming four months before the movement even began, for crying out loud. It's likely it was going to have these themes whether or not the movement ever happened.

Seriously, calm your shit.

I don't mind if there is gonna be OWS themes in the batman movie so long as it depends on the outlook of the OWS movement, if the movie is gonna have legit protest against corruption and greed originally what OWS was then I can accept it, but if it's gonna be the OWS of the apple fan boy hipster college kids tweeting how they are super cool protesting hippies in a park while they comment on the latest star bucks coffee drink and complain about the cold weather, then I will hate it.

So Obama's elected, we get a story of misery, death, and a man getting blamed for things that weren't his fault so that the citizenry can continue to worship a corrupt, depraved man whose image they adored more than the reality.

Obama goes for reelection, we get a story of despair, greed, and the good things left in the world being snapped over the knees of the evil.

Sounds about right to me.

>> No. 2168 ID: 58f9cc
Really what they should have done if they wanted to go for maximum "WHAT THE HELL?!" with the audience (can't help the comic book people that would have been expecting it) is have Ra's train him in the first movie, appear to die, and then not show up again until the third movie as the main villain.

'Course I also think it would have been awesome if the movie with Bane as the villain had him teaming up with the Penguin. Played by Martin Klebba.

Penguin was a very plausible 'realistic' villain they could pull off, I guess Nolan just thought 'it's been done before' Although so had Joker and Catwoman - maybe he favored them.

Even though this is meant to be realistic, there is so many other awesome Batman villains I wish could be put in the movies or even ones that could be 're-imagined'.

The best interpretation of Batman villains (thought not exactly cinematic ) was the Arkham game series - it's like when you see and hear them it felt like 'Yep that is TOTALLY how they would be if they walked out of the comic pages!'

Oddly enough the only design I didn't care for in the Arkham series was Bane's. He had sooo many muscles I spend the majority of his fight wondering how he was capable of moving. That and the Venom/Titan iv drip looked wonky to me. It's a shame that the only fight in Asylum the developers actually seemed to have taken their time on was Ivy's as Bane should have been a much tougher boss.

See, people that think Venom turns him into the Hulk are just basing their concept of Bane off of Batman & Robin, which is so unfair. You wouldn't base your concept of Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy off of that, would you?

Bane was already extremely strong before he was ever introduced to Venom. It was also only one part of what made him so badass. Among other physical alterations, he originally had ceramic plates sewn under his skin. Venom was just his boost, something to pump him up further and give him an extra surge. He was as addicted to it as any drug, but originally cutting off his Venom supply didn't take him out for the count immediately. He was being used as a guinea pig prototype for a super soldier program, basically.

Bane as originally introduced was intended to be canny, heavily trained, well-connected, and near-superhuman. He's basically big bulky evil Batman, but without the limitless resources and "prep time".

True but Batman mostly operates at night, when it's hard to see and he's concealed in darkness/shadows, making it easier for him to disorient his targets before attacking.
However that can also be excused-different suits for different times of day/surroundings.

But equally he wants to present this very vacuous, soulless persona to Gotham, so that hopefully no-one will suspect him but will just think he's a spoiled bastard. Consequently, in his most intimate moments he has Alfred, he has Rachel and there is not a whole lot there.

>At some point, he's got to start living. He is seriously behind in terms of life and enjoyment of life. That's all been sacrificed and at some point, hopefully it's Alfred's wish that he will start to live again. Of course this tragedy has defined him, but to a degree he's sacrificed everything that most people would consider worth living and he's going to have to relearn that, embarrassingly late in life.

>Christopher Nolan recently spoke with Empire about The Dark Knight Rises:

I think this is the biggest one I've done. The biggest one anyone's done since the silent era, in technical terms. It's all about historical epics in conception. It's a war film. It's a revolutionary epic. It's looking back to the grand-scale epics of the past, really, and for me that goes as far back as silent films.

I've been watching a lot of silent films with my kids on Blu-Ray. We've shot over a third of the movie on the IMAX format, and that naturally puts you more in the mode of staging very large events for the camera. It's my attempt to get as close to making a Fritz Lang film as I could. It's also more in the mould of Doctor Zhivago, or A Tale Of Two Cities, which is a historical epic with all kinds of great storytelling taking place during the French Revolution. There's an attempt to visualize certain things in this film on this large scale that are troubling and genuinely to the idea of an American city. Or, to put it another way: revolutions and the destabilizing of society have happened everywhere in the world, so why not here?

Sir Michael Caine noted that during the filming of the scene in Wayne's penthouse during the party--the only time the Joker and Alfred interact--Ledger's performance nearly made him forget his lines. It would have been the only time he'd forgotten a line in his entire 55-year career.

I'm a firm believer in the "nothing left to give" rule--when a performer or creative type has nothing left to give, they just die rather than fade away.

One of the random penguin mooks. Batman takes a bomb, shoves it in the guy's clothes, then tosses him down a sewer, or something. Seemed amused with himself for murdering him.
>> No. 3171 ID: a200f6

He blows some guy up by strapping a bomb to him. He also burns a couple of mooks with the Batmobile. And the previous film has him kick a guy down the bell tower as well as tether Joker to a gargoyle, which implies to me he knew the Joker would fall to his death if he tried to get away.

>>3162
Burton never read a single Batman book for reference. He admits this. It even became a big point of a stupid argument he had with Kevin Smith (Smith wrote a Batman book called cacophony and Burton supposidly slammed it, so Smith called him out on why he never read any Batman books)

Does throwing guys off the bell tower count too? He knocked a lot of Joker goons down that stairwell at the church.
>> No. 3173 ID: a07e9a

Yeah, that counts. Burton's Batman was pretty much a mook-murdering machine, as well as being pretty firmly based in the Adam West mythos with a bit of post-Crisis grimdark tacked on and Burton's usual heaping helping of Burtonstyle.

Now most heroes in comics have a big thing about not killing people, and that either gets slackened or removed in most modern retellings. Which is fine and usually works. It can work for Batman too, despite his comic version having not killing be an almost psychological compulsion. The problem with Burton's Batman was that he killed casually. He killed mooks that it probably would have been easier to take out nonlethally in some cases, and he did it without a second thought, sometimes even seeming to enjoy it. It made him some sort of weird amalgamation of Adam West's Batman and Frank Miller's Batman.

The Burton versions were still campy and silly. I think they were necessary as a sort of stepping stone between the Adam West version that was the most widely-known Batman at that time and something authentically serious, but obviously they devolved into pure cartoonish nonsense over time.

The preview I saw seriously looked like it could have been a Burton film. Batman pulling funny faces under the cowl (he does this total sitcom husband grimace when Catwoman tells him she knows how to drive the Batpod so shut up), silly speeches about "Join me and we can be some sort of league for justice", goofy jokes about Catwoman claiming to be Batman's wife...

It's like every time I find out more about this movie I want to see it less.

The redeeming fact of the first Burton movie was Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Of course he was the more vaudevillian version. But yeah, I'm with you on the growing dread for the next one, though I'm hopeful for the pay off. I haven't been let down yet.

Plot synopsis, courtesy of WB:

>It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

>But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

It still sounds absurd for Gotham City to EVER have a reduced crime rate, for any reason. Even a nutcase running around at night beating up the baddies and scaring the piss out of everyone wasn't enough to stop crime. This bill better be some impressive piece of law if I'm going to believe it's more effective than the Dark Knight.

Batman's sacrifice played a role, too: since all the mob bosses and mooks had caught on to Bruce's "one rule" (as Maroni pointed out after Batman broke his legs), Batman's insistence on taking credit for Dent's death made it appear that Batman had gotten rid of that rule.

Combine the Dent Act with Batman's perceived willingness to kill, and you can likely imagine how Gotham cleaned up crime over an eight-year period.

>Chris and David started developing the story in 2008 right after the second film came out. Before the recession. Before Occupy Wall Street or any of that. Rather than being influenced by that, I was looking to old good books and good movies. Good literature for inspiration... What I always felt like we needed to do in a third film was, for lack of a better term, go there. All of these films have threatened to turn Gotham inside out and to collapse it on itself. None of them have actually achieved that until this film. 'A Tale of Two Cities' was, to me, one of the most harrowing portrait of a relatable, recognizable civilization that completely folded to pieces with the terrors in Paris in France in that period. It's hard to imagine that things can go that badly wrong.

From 411mania (with some minor grammar cleanup):

>The Los Angeles Times reports that, once Man of Steel reaches theaters next summer, Warner Bros. won't release any movies based on DC Comics properties until at least 2015.

>None of the DC movies currently in the works have a producer, director, or cast (except for Zack Snyder's $200-million-plus take on Superman). Therefore, at least three years will pass before the studio releases a new DC title.

>According to the Los Angeles Times, Christopher Nolan spoke to Warner Bros. about acting as a producer on the Justice League movie and planned reboot of Batman, but he will reportedly not have any involvement with either of those films.

>The studio will spend the next few years raising awareness of the other characters in the DC Universe by releasing games, toys, comics, and TV shows. Warner Bros. film group president Jeff Robinov says of this campaign: "My hope is that over the next month or so, we'll be ready to lay out the plan for the next DC movies."

I appreciate that DC wants to have a gameplan for its films in the future, but I think they want to recreate the whole Avengers buildup for Justice League, and unless they plot every film out in advance so that they'll work as standalone films and as part of a "bigger picture", those films will suck as much as Superman Returns.

>They never call her Catwoman by name

Wut. They couldn't even do that? Is saying her name too much in Nolan's world? Does that just shatter his 'set in reality' image? We can have a Doctor that wears a mask and get's called Scarecrow. We have a guy that goes by Joker very openly and isn't just said as a head nod. Harvey Dent even calls himself Two Face briefly. And I'm sure Bane's name will be said. But calling the cat burglar 'cat woman' is just too much?

I know it's a small gripe, but it's been a lot of small gripes about her that have added up.

Maybe I'll be lucky and her name being mentioned slipped the reviewer's mind.

The supposition remains idiotic, though.

DC introduced Bane in 1993, well before either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney ever rose to national attention. Nolan and his screenwriters had Bane in mind as a villain for Dark Knight Rises before Romney announced that he would run for President. Anyone who thinks Nolan meant to target Romney with his choice of Bane as a villain should have their head examined.

I saw it last night. That pic describes it aptly. It had plenty of action, especially with Bane who's pretty much the only villain that can physically take on Batman. Alfred was amazing, by far the best performance in the trilogy, very moving. I enjoyed Anne Hathaway as Catwoman (well they call her by her name Selina Kyle, The Cat Burglar and a thug calls her "The Cat" at one point). She's was smart, sassy, had loose morals and ethics, and is a decent fighter. And the best part is she doesn't do anything ridiculous like wear a tail, drink milk, or make references to kitty litter. I also found the Scarecrow presiding as the judge to be pretty funny. He's fits the part of pompous asshole very well. The best part I found in the movie is that it's not just Batman that saves Gotham. It's a full team effort of Gordon, Batman, Catwoman, Fox, and the entire police force. Not the best in the series, but a very good conclusion.
>> No. 3358 ID: b6c5b9
I have returned from watching the film, and like other reviewers, I have issues with it: neither Selina or Miranda received a competent amount of character development (though I can understand that with Miranda); Bane received enough development, but his motive for the destruction of Gotham remained just unclear enough to bother me; and Nolan could have explored the consequences of Bane revealing the truth about Harvey Dent beyond the "liberation" of Blackgate Prison.

On the other hand: all of the fight scenes came off great, especially the first Batman/Bane encounter; the major supporting cast of the trilogy did their usual amazing job; the movie rarely lagged or felt slow, at least to me; it tied into Begins and Dark Knight in the best possible ways; and the conclusion to the film -- and the trilogy -- felt satisfying even as it left a few questions open for discussion.

I'd consider it better than Batman Begins, but not The Dark Knight, and a worthwhile conclusion to the Dark Knight Trilogy. Whoever tackles the franchise after this has a big hill to climb.
>> No. 3372 ID: 98c9d4
It's the Return of the Jedi of the Trilogy not just in placement. A grand ending that pretty much wraps it all up with just enough fun at the end to leave discussions open for years to come much like Time Machine left you with "What books would you take?"

Dark Knight was the Empire, but this was still pretty damn entertaining.

Blame Chris Nolan. He really likes heavy heavy bass, which is super noticeable when you see the movie with a good sound system. When I saw it in theatres, I specifically remember Inception having the same "problem."

>Nolan could have explored the consequences of Bane revealing the truth about Harvey Dent beyond the "liberation" of Blackgate Prison.

I liked that he didn't, actually. Think about it.A guy who literally blew up a quarter of the city and is threatening everyone with nuclear destruction says that the martyr of the city is actually a vicious murderer, and the war hero is actually a complete liar. Why would anyone believe him? Would you believe it if some Al Qaeda guy went on TV and said "we have proof, in this handwritten letter from Joe Biden, that Obama is actually a Kenyan Muslim!" The only reason Blake did is because he saw Gordon's reaction.

Tom Hardy's voice was amazing. "What a lovely, lovely voice!"

Probably because Gordon had a written speech which everyone sees him put away again and recognised it when Bane read from it.

>Here's the quote from the novel [that discusses The Joker's fate]:

Now that the Dent Act had made it all but impossible for the city's criminals to cop an insanity plea, it (Blackgate Prison) had replaced Arkham Asylum as a preferred location for imprisoning both convicted and suspected felons. The worst of the worst were sent here, except for the Joker, who, rumor had it, was locked away as Arkham's sole remaining inmate. Or perhaps he had escaped. Nobody was really sure. Not even Selina.

Probably going to be another Tim Burton-esque mini origin scene with Batman going down Crime Alley and having a brief moment to remember it.

...and then it's revealed to be a Silver Age-era Batman. He's on the sidewalk while people look on.
