Also, Sage, I seem to recall you being "done" with Star Wars?

In fact I seem to remember saying I'd ban you for a year the next time you talked about it, and you said you'd be fine with that because you were ever-so-done with it?

So DC continues to roll with its series of "firsts" in the New 52 era. Barbara's roommate is apparently transgendered. Whoopty shit right?

It was impossible to keep myself from suddenly laughing when I read the page where this unbelievable bomb is dropped.

"There's this serial mass murderer that was trying to kill me using my own mother as a hostage. My brother is also trying to kill me."

"I'm transgendered."

Oh snap! The timing is amazing.

>"You're an oppressed minority! OMG that makes me love you so much!"

"You hear that potential transgender consumers that may read comics? We accept you!"

Now watch her never get mentioned again in an issue of any significance.

Yeah, if you're gonna go out of your way to make a character transgender, at least give it a purpose or elaborate on it, not just use it as a one-page shock attempt.
>> No. 9579 ID: 6121dd

I always thought that if you wanted a transgender comic book character it would make an interesting component of a back-story for a Clayface style character.

Someone trying to remake their body to their preferred gender, experimental body-altering cosmetics made in a bathtub with notes stolen from the lab where the original Clayface (TAS) gunk got made, overdose, apparently dead, buried in a cheap coffin in high silica soil, rise as a shambling mud like horror, realize it might not be so bad since said shambling mud like horror can actually be compressed into a shape that matches the gender they were going for, walk around with a newfound fear that they're not going to be able to maintain or pass, go after whoever is selling poison as an underground gender reassignment surgery, fight Batman, either be unable to live with the fact that they're living a lie just as much as before their death and become a recurring homicidal lunatic, or settle down and do a face heel turn. Something like that anyway.
>> No. 9585 ID: 299d95

I reeeeally don't think "shambling horror who dies or turns into a crazy villain" is quite what anyone's looking for in transgender acceptance in comics, either.
>> No. 9602 ID: 6121dd

I wrote that wrong, the other end game is that they'd become a hero or at least manage a somewhat normal life.

I got the idea after reading a news story where one man castrated another in his kitchen and stitched up the incision with yarn. It was explained that the likely reason someone did this was that they were MtF transsexual and on Androgen blockers with really appalling side-effects.

The idea of your body being so alien to you that you'd let a stranger perform surgery on you in their kitchen to try and move you a step closer to being what you thought was natural or right was staggering.

I was also thinking of a conversation I had with an MtF transgender woman in the middle of her transition online where she described having to leave her home, her family, and was living for starvation wages where her job was constantly at risk if anyone found out.

It also occurred to me that if something like that body reshaping formula from TAS actually existed it'd be a godsend for transpersons, and they'd run a lot risk to use it.

The idea for that arc was kind of a metaphorical representation of that process, horrible risk, horrible consequences, uncertain future. If it was a positive I'd make them eventually learn to master their abilities and fully become whatever they felt they were.

So I see issues of this periodically at my local shop. Obviously I like the cover art, but not sure about the content.

Can anyone recommend or warn me of this series? I might think about picking it up, but not sure.
>> No. 9485 ID: 784364
I read a few issues. It seemed like it was trying to be Artistic And Meaningful with the story and not really succeeding. It comes off as rather pretentious. Basically the covers are an admission the stories aren't very good and that they're just trying to draw you in with fanservice.
>> No. 9492 ID: 98c9d4

Thank you! Yeah, I was afraid it would be a trap.
